KONZA TECHNOLOGY CITY

UNIVERSITY DESIGN GUIDELINES

Konza Technology City is a flagship Kenya Vision 2030 project to advance growth and prosperity for Kenyans. Marketed as the new “Silicon Savanna”, the city is a strategic investment in Kenya’s growing ICT sector and when completed, will be home to leading companies in education, life sciences, telecom, and BPO/ITES. Envisioned as a world-class technology hub situated within the East African savanna, Konza merges the values of technology, sustainability, and local diversity. Didier Design Studio worked collaboratively with engineering firm Tetra Tech and OZ Architecture to develop the University Design Guidelines for the Konza Technopolis Development Authority (KoTDA).

The University Design Guidelines provide a framework for an urban campus to host 2-3 distinct universities. The guidelines designate safe and engaging pedestrian routes that link various university nodes, connecting academic and residential zones and linking to the broader urban context. Interior courtyards and plazas are located to receive stormwater runoff for retention and bio filtration. An amphitheater with flexible space for events and informal recreational use provides a center for social life as the campus crosses the Green Transit Corridor, meeting the urban fabric and connecting to the city’s main transportation spine.
